El término suele referirse a los chinos peranakan, el grupo peranakan más numeroso y de mayor importancia, los cuales formaron a mediados del s. XIX una comunidad estable que había adoptado en parte las costumbres indígenas y hablaba en general la lengua nativa. Por contraste, a comienzos del s. XX una gran oleada de inmigrantes chinos creó una comunidad china totok (nacido en el extranjero). A diferencia de los peranakan, los totok conservaron sus dialectos chinos y siguieron orientados hacia su país de origen.
